FAMILY | TOURS | COLLECTABLES | GALLERY | ADVERTISEMENT | FUN 125th ANNIVERSARY | FLEECE HOTEL | WALTER SCOTT | ABBOTSFORD HOUSE | JAMES DAVIDSON |
A Journey to the Past 125 years after founding the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club (D.D.T.C.) all members had been invited to come to the place of the then founding and at the same time returning to the roots of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, too. We readily followed this invitation to attend the Jubilee Meeting, the Club Show, and last but not least to visit the historical places having a close relationship to the development and history of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier - in his early days to be called "pepper- and mustard dog". Carlisle in the far North of England and situated directly on the borders to Scotland was our aim. This we reached in the late afternoon of Friday, July 21st, 2000 - a bit exhausted and tired but happy. And here is our story starts we want to tell you of.
The Chairman of the D.D.T.C., Mrs Jackie Shore (left), gave some explanantions to the schedule of the events and then allowed Mr John Roslyn to speak.
John Roslyn (right) in his inimitable manner, gave proof of the history of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, his origin, his presence as Pepper and Mustard Terrier, his way of becoming the Dandie Dinmont Terrier of today. A summary of his speech may be read clicking on the graphic (left).
In 1875, exactly on November 15th, six Dandie friends met in the Fleece Hotel in Selkirk to found the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club (D.D.T.C.). By this one of the first - if not the first one - dog club had been born.
Nowadays, 125 years later, members of the D.D.T.C. of the present time and their guests met in Carlisle to commemorate the year of foundation and the turn of the millennium as well. The place where all was happening was the Swallow Hilltop Hotel, and where the Championship Show of the Club was intended to take place two days later.
.
The next morning at 10:30 a.m. we all met to start on a bus tour to historical places of the Dandie Dinmont. We were set back by two centuries as many of the Dandie friends had come in dresses typical for the time of foundation. We saw wonderful costumes from all ranks, quite tastefully stylish and suiting the ambiente of that weekend.
Especially John Charlton by his being dressed as James Davidson knew how to remember all of us of the name Dandie Dinmont.
