The Dandie Dinmont Terrier in Switzerland

It is owing to Dr. Hans Räber and his entries in the "Enzyklopädie der Rassehunde" that the first steps of the breed of Dandie Dinmont Terriers in Switzerland are documented.

These first entries of Dandie Dinmont Terriers in the SHSB Volume VI of 1896 were the dog "Brandy", mustard, bred by J. Nutsford, Botherly, Carlisle, and the bitch "Lady", mustard, from the kennel of J.W. Oram, Carlisle. Owner of both of the Dandies was the hotelkeeper R. Mader of St. Gallen. It is not known whether there was some breeding, however, no descendants are registered in the SHSB.

Two further entries are to follow in Volumes VIII and IX: "Oak-King", mustard, and "Nell", pepper, bred by J.W. Oram, Carlisle. Owner of both Dandies was E. Vogt, Winterthur.

"Darkie", pepper, bred by Miss Hodges and "Crony", pepper, bred by E.W.H. Blagg. Both Dandies were owned by J. Lucand.

No registrations of descendants of those four Dandies are to found in the SHSB, too.

The first litter Dandie Dinmont Terriers to be registered fell in 1973 in the kennel of "Falkenhof" of the breeder J. Isler from Aeugstertal. Parents of those eight puppies were "Hendell Golden Gorse" and "Hendell Gentlemanns Relish", both mustard. They had been imported from Great Britain from Mrs Hulme who had bred them.

1983 imported Mrs. Esther Mohn from the german breeders Gertraude Maass/Mary Tyson-Beinhauer the pepper bitch "Beautiful Girl of Beerenkamp", born 8.11.1982. This bitch was successfully issued. Whether there were puppies, is not well-known us.

It is furthermore known that in 1985/1986 all together six Dandies had been imported to Switzerland from Great Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands (Salicia's).

In 1993 there had been registered two litters (breeder Mrs Schelling) with a total of eight puppies and one import from Germany ("Hendell Lady Beth", mustard).

In 2001 a new kennel was registered under the suffix "Dandie from Switzerland". The breeders, Anita and Willi Droppmann, were lucky to announce their first litter in June that year.

We thank Anita and Willi Droppmann for essential information regarding this history.
