The
Dandie Dinmont Terriers on Stamps
As
yet, the Dandie has never had a stamp to itself, but I have traced two
philatelic items which illustrate the breed. Each year since 1970, Monaco
has issued a stamp to coincide with the 'Exposition Canine International'
held in Monte-Carlo.
Sometimes
we'll get a single breed on a single stamp, sometimes two breeds on a
stamp (or pair of stamps), but just occasionally we get several breeds
on a single postage stamp.
The
1986 issue was tiled 'Les Races de Terriers D'Ecosse' and illustrated
the five native Scottish Terrier breeds.
The illustrations are quite sketchy, but tucked away, sitting in the middle
of the group is an unmistakable Mustard Dandie Dinmont. All of the Monaco
'Canine Expo' issues are now getting hard to find, but the 1986 issue
is especially so - because it has five times the appeal, I suppose. First
Day of Issue Press. Releases being quite rare. It is one of the latter
which is illustrated.

The
only other item I have found comes from the African Islands of St. Thomas
and Prince, or to give them their full title, 'Republica Democratica de
Sao Tome e Principe'. This former Portuguese colony, which gained independence
in 1975, is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Gulf of Guinea. In
recent years they have issued many colourful stamps, aimed at the 'collectors
market'.
Back
in 1981 they issued a set of seven stamps with a souvenir sheet, titled
'Dog Paintings'. The sheet shows a young girl trying to persuade two Dachshunds
to pull her little cart, complete with dolly - Ah! On the border are four
other breeds and if you look in the bottom right you will see a rather
scruffy Dandie, the type that a good friend of mine would describe as
a 'poor unfortunate little thing'!
