Dandie Dinmont Terrier in Germany
Up to 1945 there are only 52 Dandie Dinmont Terriers entered in the Breed Book of the KfT (Klub für Terrier), 44 Dandies of German breeding and 8 imports. Breeders of that time were Mrs von Malinckrodt from the Chiemsee with her kennel "von dem Daxlberg" and Mrs Schnorr from Berlin with her kennel "von Carolsfeld". Mrs Schnorr and her dogs were killed by a bomb hitting her house. The years of war ended breeding Dandie of that time. Regarding the period before World War II, apparently there are no precise information at hand.
After the war only one Dandie import was entered has been entered having number 53 in the German Breed Book. It was to last until 1964 that Mrs. Gertraude Maass had the first litter of Dandies in her kennel "von Beerenkamp".
In 1962 Gertraude Maass imported from Miss Bradbury the bitch "Watersend Sparkle", originating from the then famous breed Shrimpney and of Clane. Gertraude Maass found a matching male by "Corrie of Gardenside", progeny Shrimpney and Salismore. The first litter consisted of 5,1 whelps.
Together with Mrs Erna Butzke did she import the male "Shrimpney Scarlet Coat" from Miss Dandison. He and Sparkle were to become ancestors of all following "von Beerenkamp"-Dandies.
The following years, Gertraude Maass imported males from Great Britain every now and then- And at the same time she continuously build her own bitch-line - a total of eight generations.
Only in 1972 a second kennel appeared. Erna Butzke had two litters under her kennel "von Annehausen". In 1975 fell the first litter in the kennel "Florina's" of Christel Bauermeister.
Breeding Dandies continued to prosper, new breeders appeared. The number of whelps rose from year to year, and in the beginning of the 80ies they were close to 30 whelps a year. From that time on they remained on the same level.
After many a trial done in vain in the former GDR the first litter fell in the Barkey kennel in 1987. Encouraged by this success more kennels were founded.
After the Fall of the Wall a new development began in 1989. In the now united Germany and under cover of the KfT the number of whelps rose rapidly. With numbers of 65 in 1993 and 55 in 1995 the up then highest numbers were registered. However, these activities in breeding did not last for long and the following years the annual average fell to some above 40 whelps.
Further information on the development of the breed in Germany, the kennels,, the litters, the imports as well as some different analyses may be read in DandieOnline in the Breeding and Litter Statistics from 1956 till today.
The kennel "German Dandies'" of Monika and Manfred Rosenbaum may be called the most successful kennel up to know. 12 titles as World Winner and Championships of 18 different countries of Europe, and in addition countless titles of the day, are on the side of their success.
Dandie bred in Germany as well as imported ones - mostly of Great Britain - have had remarkable success in the passed 12 years - among others 16 titles of World Winner.
